Transcript:

Hello and welcome. This is our inaugural edition of what we're calling Tale of the Tape, I'm Matt Tempelis. I'm the president of Engineered Materials. And through this series, I plan to be your minister of tape. I've been solving tape and gas and converted parts, applications and and challenges for the past 28 years. And hopefully we can impart some of this wisdom that we have here at Engineered Materials as we look at key opportunities and issues in the world of tapes, in the world of gaskets, especially insulation and materials and converted parts. We look forward to having you join us.

We have to talk about pressure sensitive adhesives. What is a pressure sensitive adhesive? Well, it's a permanently tacky substance that adheres with pressure to create a very strong holding force. These all start off as liquid adhesives, and they can be worn by water, solvents, or they can be melted into hot melts. So they either dry or they cool to to leave a sticky substance that is left behind. Typically, these can be roll coated onto silicone or Teflon release liners or onto specialty backings to create pressure sensitive tapes. Once pressure is applied to a pressure sensitive adhesive, the adhesive begins the process we call wetting out.

Also, with time, depending on the adhesive up to 72 hours, you get the ultimate bond strength. So pressure and time are required to create the ultimate bond strength of a pressure sensitive adhesive. What are some of the most common types of tapes or pressure sensitive adhesives? Well, I think Scotch tape and masking tape has been around for almost a century now. Innovated by 3M, one of our key partners. Post-it notes are another great example of removable tapes that don't leave a residue. All of these leverage pressure sensitive adhesives. So, in conclusion, going forward, we're going to do some deep dives into very specific topics around pressure sensitive adhesives. I just wanted to briefly touch the surface here, but looking forward to a lot of fun and hopefully some some information that will be very useful to you. At Engineered Materials, we provide more than just tapes and gasket parts. We plan and we do deliver trust, design improvement, and we elevate your performance. So we'll see you next time on Tale of the Tape. Thank you.
